ABOUT ALPINE MEADOWS
Terrain: Excellent
Alpine Meadows ski resort features some of the best powder bowls around, a total of seven of them in all. We love the quality of the terrain here, especially the areas that require a little bit of hiking. Alpine is right next door to Squaw Valley, and so it has a similar feel. However, on the days where fresh lines are nowhere to be found elsewhere, a little bit of traversing or hiking will pay off mightily. This fits in perfect with the style of the the more explorer-oriented skier (like us!). If you prefer the groomers, some of the trails here are groomed summit to base to give you that fast and smooth corduroy line. Overall, we love the terrain here, and it stays fresh longer than some of the other larger resorts nearby. The resort features 2,400 acres of skiable terrain and 1,800 feet of vertical change. The top elevation is 8,637 ft.
Snow + Weather: Above Average
When it comes to snowfall, Alpine Meadows is usually very good in terms of the quantity of snow they receive as well as how long it keeps. On average, the yearly snowfall is 460 inches, which is pretty good in comparison to other Tahoe resorts. The advantage here is that the snow tends to stay a while in the trees and sheltered areas.
Terrain Parks: Above Average
Alpine definitely gets creative with their terrain parks, which is why we give this park crew a positive review. It might not be as big as neighboring Northstar’s park, but we recommend checking it out, especially on the weekends when there are relatively fewer crowds.
Crowds: Excellent
Alpine Meadows is located right next to Squaw Valley, but is much lesser known. This works heavily in their advantage, because a lot of the ski & snowboard traffic goes next door and leaves those at Alpine with more fresh tracks. Also, less people on the mountain can make a big difference in terms of keeping a high degree of mountain safety. Of course, like many Tahoe resorts the weekends do get busy so you need to get there early to get that good parking spot. If you like fewer crowds, another good option is getting some Homewood Mountain lift tickets (Homewood is owned by Alpine Meadows).
Location: Above Average
Many people who have been to this resort will tell you that there is great snow and great views of Lake Tahoe and the California Sierra Mountains. It is close to the lake, and close to some of the apres ski found in Tahoe city and Truckee. Overall, it’s easy to access when coming in from the north or south shore of Lake Tahoe and has good proximity to many amenities.
On-Mountain Services: Average
We highly recommend the ski school here, because with fewer crowds you get more attention but you don’t lose anything in terms of quality of terrain. This makes a good combination for groups who have some individuals needing lessons and some more experienced skiers and snowboarders who want advanced trails. Although it is not as big as neighboring Squaw Valley, Alpine does provide a good sized day lodge with a deck and there is food provided in many locations.
Lodging: Average
There is lodging available within a mile of the resort, and much more lodging can be found in Tahoe City and other areas of North Lake Tahoe about 6 miles away.
Other Perks:
This ski resort has a unique focus on family oriented activities, especially the ski school and the option to buy lift tickets that are interchangeable so that parents can take turns watching the younger kids. They also have a great children’s program.
Weaknesses:
Parking can be difficult on busy days, and there are not many ways around this. So, just remember to get there early! Or, there is a free shuttle to and from Tahoe City and the resort. Also make sure to get your Alpine mountain resort lift tickets early as well before the lines that the tickets & passes window get too long. Season passes help a lot in this regard if you come here frequently, and they can also save you a lot of money.
